In a surprising turn of events, Universal Music Group has announced its decision to remove its music from TikTok effective 1st February. The move follows unsuccessful negotiations between the two giants to reach a new agreement on usage rights. This development could significantly impact TikTok, given the integral role music plays in the platform.
Negotiations between Universal Music Group, home to global music stars like Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, and Billie Eilish, and TikTok fell through due to disagreements on compensation for artists and concerns about generative AI usage. Universal expressed disappointment with TikTok’s offer, claiming it was below expectations and failed to provide adequate safeguards.
Universal’s existing rights agreement with TikTok, initially signed in 2021, expired on the 31st of January. From now on, all universal-owned content will be removed from the platform. The announcement by Universal stated “[They} have no agreed to terms for a new agreement”, leading to the cessation of licensing content to TikTok and TikTok Music services.
Universal accused TikTok of attempting to “bully” them during negotiations by leveraging its vast reach to pressure for a reduced payment agreement. Universal claimed TikTok selectively removed music from developing artists to intimidate them into accepting an unfavourable deal.
This development comes as a significant blow to TikTok, which has increasingly focused on music as a key element of its platform. A commissioned report by TikTok last November highlighted the platform’s influence on music discovery and sharing, making it crucial for both emerging and established artists.
While TikTok is holding its ground publicity, the impact of losing such a substantial music library may lead to renewed negotiations. The parties may need to find a compromise to ensure the continued availability of popular music on TikTok.
As Universal Music Group starts pulling its tracks form TikTok, the implications for both parties are substantial. The platform, known for its influence on music trends and discovery, may face challenges in retaining its position as a music discovery powerhouse. The hope is that negotiations will resume, leading to a resolution that benefits both TikTok and Universal Music Group. Until then, TikTok users will find their sounds muted and removed.
